Former Arsenal and Liverpool midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain revealed his goal is to return to an English club.
The 32-year-old has been without a team since terminating his contract with Besiktas in August. He is currently training with Arsenal’s U21 squad to maintain his fitness.
When talking about his future during a media appearance recently, Chamberlain said: “This is a different situation for me. I was a free agent when I left Liverpool too, but that only lasted a month or two, and I signed for the Turkish club on August 14 after the season started. Now it’s different—the season is fully underway. This waiting period is tough; you miss out on opportunities and crave to play.”
“It’s not easy for any player, but luckily I have a choice now. I’ve turned down some offers and need to consider more factors these days: family, kids—I have to choose more carefully. But my core goal is to get back on the pitch as soon as possible.”
“Although you can actively look for opportunities, essentially you can only wait passively. You wait for a club to think you can add value, and most of the time is spent waiting.”
When asked if he had received any offers, Chamberlain replied: “I have, but mostly from overseas clubs.”
“I played abroad for two years, and it was tough on the family front. There were times when I didn’t see my son and wife for six to eight weeks in a row, and I barely had time for my parents—even if I went back to England for a day or two, it was just a quick visit. I don’t want to repeat that. I hope to return to England and wait for the right domestic opportunity.”
“Once you have kids, your priorities in life change. It’s no longer just about me and football; I have to balance family too. I’ve turned down some inappropriate offers, which has narrowed down my options. Now I’m waiting for the right project that excites me, hoping to make an immediate impact.”
