Ryan Williams’ India Debut Against Bangladesh: Eligibility Depends on Administrative Approvals

Ryan Williams, who recently gained Indian citizenship through his mother’s Anglo-Indian heritage from Mumbai, has traveled to Dhaka with India’s squad for their AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifier against Bangladesh on November 18. However, his chance to make a debut remains uncertain as he is yet to secure a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from Football Australia, along with subsequent permissions from FIFA and AFC.
The Bengaluru FC winger has trained with the team and found the net in a closed-door friendly against Bhutan. Still, the AIFF is working urgently to complete the necessary paperwork. An official AIFF statement noted, “Ryan Williams, who has obtained an Indian passport, is with the squad in Bangladesh, but his inclusion in the matchday team is contingent on receiving an NOC from Football Australia and the ensuing approvals from FIFA and AFC.”
