In this round of UEFA Euro Qualifiers, the Republic of Ireland took on Portugal. Cristiano Ronaldo was shown a red card after committing an elbowing foul on John O’Shea during the match.

The foul not only led to Portugal’s 0-2 defeat but also put him at risk of missing the opening match of the 2026 World Cup group stage.

In the 61st minute of the game, Ronaldo lost his temper during a contest in the penalty area and elbowed Irish defender John O’Shea. The referee overturned his initial decision and issued a straight red card after reviewing the VAR footage. According to FIFA’s disciplinary rules, such malicious fouls typically result in a suspension of more than two matches.

Ronaldo is already set to miss Portugal’s final qualifier against Armenia. If the suspension is extended, he is highly likely to miss the opening match of next year’s World Cup, which will be held in North America.

This marks the first red card of Ronaldo’s international career and the 13th of his professional career. As he left the pitch, he sardonically applauded the booing fans, fuelling further criticism of his behavior.

The official disciplinary decision is pending, and whether Ronaldo can participate in the World Cup group stage opener has become the focus of external attention.
