According to an official announcement from Manchester United, a cheering sight emerged at the Carrington Training Ground on Wednesday—Argentine center-back Lisandro Martínez returned to the training pitch and joined the first team for full collective training. This marks his first complete group training session with the club’s first-team members in 8 months.
The Argentine international has been sidelined since early February, when he suffered a knee injury during Manchester United’s home game against Crystal Palace and was expected to miss an extended period. Martínez underwent surgery shortly after and has spent the past few months putting in arduous efforts at the Carrington Training Ground to recover.
Now, this gradual recovery process has reached a key milestone, with Martínez finally returning to the pitch to train alongside his teammates. Since joining United from Ajax in 2022, the No. 6 player has made 91 appearances for the club, scoring 3 goals and winning the EFL Cup and FA Cup.
The return of this Argentine center-back will undoubtedly be a major boost for Erik ten Hag’s team, but the club will still manage his recovery process cautiously. When asked about Martínez’s comeback timeline last week, the Dutch manager declined to give a specific date but expressed satisfaction with Martínez’s recovery progress.
“He feels good,” Erik ten Hag revealed. “The knee response has been very positive, so I don’t want to set a specific date. He is close to joining the team for training, and the subsequent pace will depend on his own condition. However, he is indeed getting closer to fully resuming collective training.”
Manchester United will face Nottingham Forest away this Saturday, and then travel to Tottenham Hotspur for another away game before the international break.
