Chelsea travel to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Carabao Cup fourth round on Wednesday evening as they seek to recover from their shock weekend defeat.

The Blues had been embracing a purple patch of form, but were given an almighty reality check by newly-promoted Sunderland on Saturday afternoon. Chelsea underwhelmed on home soil against the Black Cats, eventually succumbing to defeat via Chemsdine Talbi’s stoppage-time strike.

The result brought Chelsea’s four-match winning streak to a close and saw them sink to ninth in the Premier League table, but they can return to winning ways in the cup when they visit struggling Wolves in the first of two meetings between the teams before the November international break.

The Carabao Cup has brought the only wins of Wolves’ season to date as pressure mounts on Vítor Pereira, who angrily confronted fans at Molineux over the weekend. Their last-gasp defeat at home to Burnley on Sunday marked a new low in the Portuguese manager’s reign, with just two points accumulated from nine league games this term.

Pereira has lost his only previous meeting with Chelsea, but Wolves have a relatively strong recent record against the Blues. While they conceded nine across two defeats last season, they have won three of their last five clashes with the west London giants. They desperately need another positive result on Wednesday night.

Liverpool and Crystal Palace lock horns for the third time this season when they clash in the Carabao Cup fourth round at Anfield on Wednesday evening.

The Eagles have been triumphant in both previous meetings this season, beginning with their Community Shield victory and followed up by a last-gasp Premier League win in late September. Palace have won three and drawn one of their last four with Liverpool and will head to Merseyside full of confidence, especially given the woeful form of their opponents.

Liverpool plunged into a full-blown crisis on Saturday evening as they were deservedly beaten by Brentford. Their fourth straight Premier League defeat and fifth loss in their last six matches has alarm bells ringing, with Arne Slot under pressure to turn performances and results around swiftly after the summer’s gargantuan transfer spend.

The Reds have enjoyed the Carabao Cup in recent years, reaching three of the last four finals and winning the competition twice in that time. However, they were beaten finalists last season as they were conquered by Newcastle United and their new superstar striker Alexander Isak at Wembley.

Palace don’t enter the fixture in particularly blistering form having suffered a drop-off in results since their 19-match unbeaten run was ended by Everton on their last trip to Merseyside. They are winless in four and even suffered a shock 1–0 defeat to Cypriot minnows AEK Larnaca in the Conference League last Thursday.

Liverpool will be desperate for respite amid a torrid spell, but Palace, spurred on by last term’s FA Cup triumph, will be eager to take another step towards silverware on Wednesday.

Arsenal welcome Brighton & Hove Albion to the Emirates Stadium for Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup fourth-round clash.

The Gunners are leading the way in the Premier League off the back of an imperious defensive record, and another clean sheet on Sunday helped them to a slender victory over Brighton’s A23 rivals Crystal Palace.

The Seagulls were beaten at Manchester United on Saturday amid an up-and-down start to their 2025–26 campaign, but they’ve been absolutely electric in this competition so far, defeating Oxford United and Barnsley 6–0 to set up this tie. Arsenal, meanwhile, beat Port Vale 2–0 in the third round.

There’s certainly no love lost between these two teams after their pair of 1–1 draws last season were laden with controversy. The Gunners felt aggrieved in both stalemates, having seen Declan Rice harshly sent off in the first meeting before Brighton were awarded a penalty in the reverse fixture for William Saliba’s soft collision with João Pedro.

The visitors also downed the hosts when they last faced off in this competition three years ago, as a Brighton side led by Roberto De Zerbi won 3–1 in north London.

Manchester City’s Carabao Cup journey continues on the road in the fourth round, as they visit Swansea City on Wednesday night.

The Cityzens have met the Welsh side twice since they were relegated from the Premier League in 2018, winning 3–2 and 3–1 in a pair of competitive FA Cup ties. City are unbeaten in 15 against their upcoming opponents, last tasting defeat in this fixture during their first Premier League title-winning campaign back in 2011–12.

Since dropping down to the second tier, Swansea haven’t threatened a return to the top-flight, and they sit 13th in the Championship through 12 games in 2025–26. Another mid-table finish is projected, but perhaps Alan Sheehan’s side will be able to stage a magical cup run, having fought back from 2–0 to beat Nottingham Forest 3–2 in the third round of this competition.

Pep Guardiola’s side, meanwhile, cruised to a 2–0 win at Huddersfield Town to set up this tie, but they did have their nine-game unbeaten run snapped at the weekend, as they lost again at Villa Park. Questions continue to linger about City’s capacity to compete for the league title this season.

Newcastle have been victorious in four of their last five matches in all competitions, including their 2-1 league success over Fulham on Saturday, which has contributed to them moving into 12th spot in the Premier League table, boasting 12 points from their opening nine games.

The Magpies have been defensively solid in the league this term, conceding eight times in nine matches, but they have found it difficult down the other end, netting just nine goals.

Newcastle were 4-1 winners over Bradford City in the last round of the EFL Cup, while they have been victorious in their last two Champions League games against Union SG and Benfica.

The Magpies have won the League Cup on one previous occasion, famously triumphing in last year's final, recording a 2-1 victory over Liverpool.

Newcastle have actually won each of their last three games against Tottenham, including a 2-1 success when the two teams last locked horns at St James' Park in September 2024.

Tottenham have lost five of their last six matches against Newcastle, while they have not managed to win at St James' Park since a Premier League clash in October 2021.

Spurs last locked horns with Newcastle in the EFL Cup in December 2014, recording a 4-0 victory in the quarter-finals of the tournament, while they have not lost to the Magpies in the League Cup since 1976.

Thomas Frank's side will enter this match off the back of a 3-0 victory over Everton in the Premier League, with the result leaving them in third spot in the table, picking up 17 points from their opening nine games of the campaign.

Tottenham have only won two of their last six matches, though, and it would be fair to say that the North London outfit have struggled for consistency early in the campaign.

Spurs recorded a 3-0 win over Doncaster Rovers in the last round of the EFL Cup, and they have lifted the League Cup trophy on four occasions, with their last success coming in 2008.
