Hamann: Calling Up Said El Mala to Germany Squad Is Premature; Bayer Deserves a Spot After Strong Recent Form

19-year-old Köln striker Said El Mala has been named in Germany’s latest squad. Dietmar Hamann, Roman Weidenfeller and Lothar Matthäus discussed his surprise call-up during a show.
Hamann
“In my opinion, it’s too premature. I would have preferred to wait until next spring—there’s still time to call him up then. The hype around him from La Liga clubs is already too intense. Bayer didn’t make the squad, but he’s been playing really well for Dortmund lately and made great progress. Of course, this is a bigger blow for him, and it does more harm than good for Said El Mala. If he keeps up this form, you can call him up anytime. So for me, selecting him now is too early.”
Weidenfeller
“I’m very disappointed. Bayer has been performing exceptionally well recently. Dortmund’s upward momentum is largely related to his performances.”
Matthäus
“Why not give a special talent like Said El Mala a chance? We’ve been waiting, waiting, waiting. In Spain, young players are also given opportunities. Julian Nagelsmann has the right to call up such players, and Said El Mala is worthy of a national team spot.”
