Busquets: I Know Retirement Is Getting Closer; Hope to Play Two More Games

Spanish veteran Sergio Busquets talked about his upcoming retirement and La Liga’s overseas match plans in an interview.
The 37-year-old, currently playing for Inter Miami, has announced he will retire at the end of the 2025 season. With Inter Miami now in the MLS Playoffs, Busquets said: “Well, since I announced my retirement, I know the remaining game time is getting less and less. Now we’re in the playoff stage, and we could be eliminated at any time. I’ve accepted that, I’m enjoying every moment, and I’m eager to play two more games.”
Busquets added: “That would be a very good sign and a great way to say goodbye to my playing career. So I’m focused on the next matches, first against FC Cincinnati—that’s crucial. But personally, I know I’m getting closer to the end of my career. I’m calm because I’ve obviously accepted this reality.”
Busquets joined Inter Miami in 2023 and has already won the 2023 Leagues Cup and 2024 Supporters' Shield with the team. Now he hopes to end his career with another trophy. “I’m as calm as usual, and I’ve accepted everything. As I just said, it would be better if I could play two more games. I was in a similar situation two weeks ago, and to be honest, I almost accepted retiring then.”
La Liga’s planned match between Barcelona and Villarreal in Miami, USA, was ultimately canceled due to protests from many players and fans. Busquets pointed out: “I think many things have been confused. I don’t think the players are refusing overseas matches—they just want clear participation conditions, to negotiate, and to know what will happen in the future, just like everyone else.”
Finally, Busquets said: "Many things should be handled this way. You can’t randomly choose two teams to play an overseas match without people knowing specific details or what will happen in the next few years. I think it’s a good opportunity for football, especially La Liga, to open up to the world and play in other countries, but it needs everyone’s agreement and to be beneficial for everyone’s development."
