Rúben Amorim is set to hold talks with Manchester United’s hierarchy during the international break, following fresh doubts over his future at Old Trafford. The pressure on Amorim – who spent over £200 million on new signings this summer – intensified at the start of the season after United’s embarrassing defeat to EFL League Two side Grimsby Town in the EFL Cup on Wednesday night.

Amorim previously considered his position in January, before stating in May that he would leave without seeking a compensation fee if he was not the right person for the job. Now, after United’s penalty shootout loss to the fourth-tier club, he has voiced further concerns about his future.

The 40-year-old Portuguese manager described his situation as "extreme" and said he would speak to United’s top brass during the two-week international break that follows United’s home match against Burnley at Old Trafford on Saturday.

"I think the players spoke very loudly today about what they want," he said, implying that the players disagree with his system. “Something has to change, and you aren't going to change 22 players again.”

Some players who are set to be loaned out before Monday’s transfer deadline or face an uncertain future at United – dubbed the "bomb squad" – want to know if they will last longer at Old Trafford than Amorim.

However, United sources insist there are no plans to make a change early in the season and maintain that the club will continue to back Amorim in his role.

In what is not the first time, they hope he will provide greater clarity when he holds his pre-match press conference at Carrington this Friday lunchtime.
